Components of Certification

The board certification process evaluates candidates through a standards-based assessment across four components. The process is designed to provide evidence of expertise and requires approximately 30-hours to complete. Download Candidate Handbook.

Component I.

Component 1 evaluates a candidate’s situational judgment, decision-making, and leadership application in vignette responses. It assesses immediate, context-driven reactions to challenges in dynamic, complex environments. Candidates respond to scenario-based prompts that measure their ability to apply leadership principles, adapt to uncertainty, and make effective decisions under pressure. Responses must demonstrate critical thinking, practical problem-solving, and a clear rationale grounded in leadership best practices.

Component II.

Component 2 evaluates a candidate’s ability to reflect on and articulate leadership practices in Strategic Leadership, Governance, and Organizational Oversight. It assesses how candidates align goals with strategic priorities, develop governance structures, and ensure ethical compliance at a systemic level. Candidates submit a written portfolio entry responding to prompts that assess their understanding, experience, and application of leadership frameworks. Responses must include concrete examples, demonstrate critical analysis, and provide justifications grounded in relevant leadership theories or models.

Component 3 evaluates a candidate’s ability to lead high-performing teams, foster collaboration, and engage stakeholders effectively. It assesses how candidates navigate team dynamics, resolve conflicts, promote inclusion, and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Candidates submit a written portfolio entry reflecting on their leadership experiences in team development and stakeholder engagement. Responses must include concrete examples, demonstrate critical analysis, and provide justifications grounded in leadership theories or frameworks. This component emphasizes the application of leadership skills to cultivate positive team environments and manage stakeholder relationships successfully.

Component IV.

Component 4 evaluates a candidate’s ability to assess leadership effectiveness, measure organizational outcomes, and align individual and team efforts with organizational goals. It emphasizes data-driven insights to track success, drive continuous improvement, and ensure alignment between personal, team, and organizational performance. Candidates submit a written portfolio entry reflecting on their experiences in measuring impact and fostering alignment. Responses must include concrete examples of defining success, measuring outcomes, and adjusting strategies based on data and feedback. Candidates must also demonstrate how they have aligned efforts with organizational priorities to achieve measurable results.
